![]() Even a few solar panels would certainly be dispensable if I turn off unnecessary work stations. In the case of my colony, I have too many batteries. If you switch off unnecessary lamps or devices, much power can be saved. Especially sun lamps, which are mostly used to grow food, need an immense amount of electricity. ![]() You should also pay attention to how much electricity you actually need. It is always recommended to use several different power sources. The colony would then be left in the dark without electricity. This is not optimal, as while a solar eclipse, the batteries could completely run empty. I dismantled the generators and replaced them with solar panels. Stone floor does not catch fire in the case of an explosion. Under the batteries is no longer wood, but stone floor. In this screenshot, I have the batteries built in duet, so that two at maximum explode in case of a disaster. This is not the case with a room size of 4x2. If they have a lot of space, they get a mood buff. The size of the rooms is also reflected in the mood of the colonists. It is advisable to give a colonist (who may not have high skills) high priority for cleaning.Īfter all, some colonists, and even prisoners already have their own rooms. Especially after raids, the corridors are often blood-stained and it takes a long time to be cleaned up again. The cleanliness also affects the beauty of the rooms. Colonists may be bothered if this gets too much. If the power cables are not routed through a wall, but lie open on the floor, as here, this reduces the beauty of the rooms. What is particularly noticable here are the power cables, which were simply laid across the floor. The generators and batteries are now a ticking time bomb, soon I had to learn that they should better be placed seperated and not on a wooden floor. Yes, it is not the best idea to build the power generator and battery on wooden floor, but it gets even better: ![]() Of course, that also results in a debuff. The huge puddle in front of the research table, however, is still bad: Every time someone wants to leave the base, he gets wet. Alternatively, items can also be stored outside in shelves. Now, most items will start rotting if they are not stored covered under a roof. ![]() This savegame is from an older patch, back then it was still possible to store all items outdoors. If your colonists are in the dark for too long, they also get debuffs. So far, there is little to no light in the whole base. In the beginning, many things are anything but optimal: The colonists do not have their own sleeping rooms, so they are often disturbed by the others while sleeping and receive mood debuffs. In my first actual play through of RimWorld I built a mountain base, which means I nestled in an existing cave system. The start was very unstructured, many things I would do differently now. But even if you think you've got everything under control, there is that one pyromaniac who thinks it's fun to play with fire close to the power generators. That's why my first colony was not the very first, but the first that made it. Especially as a noob, one thing that the game keeps offering to you are creative ways to kill your colonists. In the beginning everything is a process in RimWorld. In this post, I'll show you one of my first colonies, what can go wrong and tips on how to do better.

![]() In 2015 the Van Buren was among the first drive-ins to install Digital Cinema projection. Depicting a vista of 1930s era Riverside, the mural is reminiscent of vintage orange crate labels so prized by collectors today, and also reminiscent of the classic drive-in, screen tower decorations that are now almost all completely gone from the country's landscape.įortunately the drive-in theatre is not a forgotten relic, but an exciting living history and thanks to Van Buren and other theatres like it, drive-ins are once again poised to be a familiar American movie going experience. The most striking element of this rebranding is the art mural set to be displayed on the original screen tower facing Van Buren Blvd. Taking cues from the surrounding community's cultural heritage, the marquee, box offices, snack bar and landscaping were set to be remodeled with an "Old California, Orange Ranch" theme. The audience appreciated these improvements, and turned out in record numbers.īeginning in 2007 the old Van Buren was given a new image. Then, the lots were repaved and the screens repainted. First, the latest drive-in theatre technology including FM transmitters and Technalight, the state-of-the-art projection system was installed. In 2006 when real estate development fell through, the Van Buren's owners decided to invest in a long postponed remodeling project. Although the Van Buren was never forced to close, because it has always been popular, 40 years of continuous operation did result in some despair. Like most drive-ins, the Van Buren was not built to last more than a decade before it was redeveloped, for a higher value, in the booming Southern California real estate market. ![]() Built on the site of a former orange ranch, the theatre was expanded to three screens in 1975. The Van Buren Drive-in Theatre, named for its location on Van Buren Blvd in the historic Arlington district of Riverside, California, opened in 1964 with a single screen. Now there just over 400 drive-ins in the country, but those remaining have a dedicated following of devoted fans, who love their movies outdoors in a pleasant, family friendly setting. But television, indoor theatre multiplexes and soaring real estate values saw to the decline of the drive-in, beginning the late 1970s. Its successful debut prompted others to follow, and by the mid 1950s drive-ins numbered well over 4,000, some of which held room for over three thousand cars. From humble beginnings in Depression-era New Jersey to the unprecedented national phenomenon that became a definitive icon of an entire generation, the drive-in theater brought together two of the greatest American passions: the automobile and the movies.Īuto parts salesman Richard Hollingshead opened the world's first Drive-in Theatre in Camden, New Jersey on June 6th, 1933. Nobel’s companies have survived him, making rocket launchers and the like as well as undeniably useful mining and construction tools. Like many a gilded age industrialist, Nobel turned away from the suffering he caused, endowing the arts and sciences after death to ease his conscience in life, many think, but not to truly ameliorate the damage done. Nobel’s first Swedish patent was for “ways to prepare gunpowder” and his father, also an inventor, managed the family factory before him and made arms for the Crimean War. He had a broad humanist outlook but for some reason could or would not see the worst uses of his product, even as his company sold weapons-to Italy for example, an act for which his adopted nation of France deemed him a traitor in 1891. He was already an idealistic inventor, as a Vanderbilt University biography has it, a supporter of “the peace movement” and a “truly international figure.”Ĭalled by Victor Hugo the “wealthiest vagabond in Europe,” Nobel wrote novels, poetry, drama, and letters in five languages. Nobel may have seen the light, but he did not radically change as a person. Adam Grant-whom Preet Bharara introduces on his podcast Stay Tuned as “an organizational psychologist and star professor at the Wharton School”-mentions Nobel as a “pretty radical example of people changing in pretty radical ways.” There are several problems with this interpretation. It is a fascinating case, if we credit the mistaken obituary for turning Nobel’s life around. “Legend has it, Nobel was mortified… and spent the rest of his life trying to establish a positive legacy.” He sought to connect people around the world, pioneering an early version of Google Earth “with balloons and rockets instead of satellites.” And when he died in 1896, he left half of his wealth, “over half a billion dollars today, to establish the Nobel Prizes.” This may have not been his intention, so he believed, but when he saw the image reflected back at him, he immediately sought to atone for his wayward invention. His erroneous pre-mortem obituary appeared with the headline “The Merchant of Death is Dead!” The unsparing bio went on to say that Nobel “became rich by finding ways to kill more people faster than ever before.” But ten years earlier, in 1888, when the bottle was already well uncorked, Alfred received a shock when a French newspaper misidentified him for his brother, Ludwig, who had just died. It wouldn’t take long before dynamite became a conveniently devastating weapon of war, especially in the Spanish American War, which began two years after Alfred’s death. Nobel patented dynamite in 1867, a “new, transportable explosive,” notes the Sydney Morning Herald video above, that “was an instant hit in the mining and construction industries.” Originally called “Nobel’s Blasting Powder,” the chemist and engineer soon choose a new name, from the ancient Greek work for “power.” He spent some formative years trying to harness its power, even after a botched nitro-glycerin experiment at a factory killed his younger brother and five other workers. ![]() ![]() He persevered and lived to regret it, it’s said.īorn in Sweden in 1833, Nobel became obsessed with explosives at a young age after meeting the inventor of nitro-glycerin. Though he maintained his motives were pure, Nobel had no shortage of signs telling him his creation might do at least as much harm as good. For most of his life, he had a different reputation-as the inventor of dynamite, one of the most destructive technologies of the age. Take Alfred Nobel, for instance, the founder of the Nobel Prize. Still, some warning bells should be hard to ignore. No one can ever fully predict the consequences of their actions. ![]() With a primary focus on muscle groups used during the day, this great massage will help your muscles stay flexible and prevent you from feeling stiff and sore after a big race or game. Originally we thought of doing this as hard coded Twig files, however we knew down the line this would cause some problems when we needed to add specific content for the client. The first step was moving the CMS guide into the CMS. One which would display links to the Styleguide and CMS Guide within Craft itself. Our SolutionĪs a team we discussed creating a plugin. This means old versions end up hanging around long past their use-by date. Often clients will print them out, rather than referring to the “live” version. This makes the documents hard for them to find online. It also requires quite a bit of effort to maintain all the guides, through CMS updates and site development.Ĭlients also aren’t always in the Google Docs ecosystem. Generally it involved manually cutting/pasting content to create a new guide. The process of creating the guide was pretty tedious. When their content editors moved on, we often had to resend the guide, which isn’t user friendly or efficient. While this has served us well, there was the issue of the client saving or printing this documentation. This outlines how Craft works, and how each section of the site has been designed so they can easily update their site. ![]() Until now, this has been a branded Google Word Document that we send to the client before launch, to support a full CMS training session. The other client-facing document we created was a CMS Guide. While this isn’t a deal-breaker it also wasn’t the most user friendly way for the client to find it, so we needed to think of something better. However we had no way to get it to the client without sending them a URL. The Styleguide is also great for the client so they can see each component available on the site, and can select the appropriate one based on their content. The styleguide is used to create components and global styles across the site, and help to speed up our build time.
